Forty years under a changing sky
Forty years is their story to tell. A thoughtful family gift begins by finding out which part of it they would most like to keep close.

A convention, if it means something to you
Hallmark’s US anniversary guide associates the 40th anniversary with ruby traditionally and ruby in its modern list. This is one publisher’s gift convention, not a rule for every country or relationship. A Starmap print does not acquire those materials by marking that year.
US editorial convention only; not a worldwide history, local-language review or Starmap material specification.

Let them choose the moment, if you can
The wedding may be the obvious anniversary date, but it need not be the memory the couple most wants on display. Ask about a later home, a journey or another shared beginning. A gentle question can preserve much of the surprise while avoiding a date chosen by the family for its own reasons. Do not assume the years have followed one familiar family shape or that every chapter should be commemorated publicly.

Ask the couple, or keep a surprise?
Ask about the memory
It is the strongest way to respect a date or location preference, especially when the family is unsure. You can still keep the final words or presentation a surprise.
Use a well-loved story they already tell
A documented shared memory can guide a surprise when asking directly would spoil the occasion. Check the details discreetly and avoid interpreting a private or painful date for them.
Ruby is context, not a product ingredient
Hallmark’s US list uses ruby for both traditional and modern fortieth-anniversary gifts. That does not require a red poster, and a colour choice does not imply rubies, ruby ink or a special finish. Choose the palette that fits their room. If another maker’s jewellery, a shared experience or practical support suits the couple better, the anniversary convention need not overrule that preference.
Make the family message easier to live with
Choose one shared thought
Ask contributors what they admire about the couple’s life together, rather than asking for competing slogans. Keep the full responses private.
Shorten the printed line
The example uses “You. Then, now, always.” It is original inspiration, not a claim about a real couple. A simple sentence can have more presence than a crowded list of dates or descendants.
Put the longer voices in a separate note
Let each contributor sign or add a memory away from the artwork, with permission. The poster does not need to become a public family record.
Measure, then choose the physical layout
Make a paper rectangle at 30 × 40, 40 × 50 or 50 × 70 cm and compare it with the intended wall and furniture. Leave room for the actual frame’s outer dimensions. A larger page is an option, not a judgment about the recipients’ age or eyesight. Use the finished proof to inspect line breaks, names, date and composition, then confirm the exact product before assuming material or hanging details.
Make the handover practical as well as personal
Ask whether help with placement would be welcome, without promising a fixing method before knowing the frame and wall. Check destination-specific delivery estimates before payment and leave time for proof review. If timing is uncertain, a personal note explaining the planned gift is better than claiming a guaranteed anniversary arrival. No gift wrapping or supplier-added family letter is implied.
Forty-year choices
Should family choose the date or ask the couple?
Ask when there is uncertainty or the date may be sensitive. For a surprise, choose a story they already enjoy telling and verify its details rather than inventing an interpretation.

Yes. Keep one line, choose typography deliberately and inspect the finished proof. The digital example demonstrates a composition, not certified physical readability.
